Eric Bana has had a varied career, playing a range of very different characters. He started his career in Full Frontal, a sketch comedy show. One of his popular characters was the bogan Poida. He has gone on to play The Hulk, starred in period dramas such as The Other Boyeln Girl and played the father of a young assassin in Hanna. So it shouldn’t be too surprising to hear that his next role is something completely different! He is about to play the King of RockNRoll, Elvis Presley, in the film Elvis & Nixon.
According to Deadline.com, Elvis & Nixon is being written by actor Cary Elwes (currently playing the role of the Pilot in Tin Tin), and Joey and Hanala Sagal. Cary Elwes will also be making his directorial debut with this film.
Joining Bana in Elvis & Nixon will be Danny Huston. He will take on the role of President Nixon.
Elvis & Nixon will be based on the meeting Presley had with then President Nixon, on 21 December 1970. Elvis visited the White House to make the strange request to be made a Federal Agent at Large in the war against drugs!
A TV film, of the same name, was made in 1997, starring Rick Peters as Elvis, and Bob Gunton as Nixon.
No start or release date for the film has been announced yet. In the meantime, check out the clips below of Eric Bana as ‘Poida’ and a clip with the letter Elvis wrote Nixon & photos taken during the infamous meeting between the men:
