Australian actress Naomi Watts will play Princess Diana in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Biopic Caught In Flight.
It was rumoured that Jessica Chastain was to star as the People’s Princess, however, today it was confirmed that Watts has landed the coveted role.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Watts has said it is “an honour to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
Caught In Flight will focus on the last two years of Diana’s life, where she was on a search for personal happiness and became an international campaigner, trying to give a voice to those whose plights were being ignored.
“Hirschbiegel said Watts has enough in her acting armoury to embody ‘the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.'” (The Hollywood Reporter)
Filming on Caught In Flight is set to begin later this year, with an aim for it to hit cinemas sometime in 2013.
