This is how I will always remember Whitney Houston. As a fresh faced, super talented, 22 year old, who had me singing at the top of my lungs about my primary school crush “How Will I Know if He Really Loves Me?”; she had me copying her moves in “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”; and shedding tears and inspiring me with her renditions of “I Will Always Love You” and “One Moment In Time”. Her music was the soundtrack of my life in the late 80s and 90s.
I was so sad and shocked to wake to the news of her death this morning. Whitney’s was the first ever cassette tape I owned, which was on repeat in my first ever walkman. I would deafen passers by as I tried to hit all her high notes, even the dogs in the neighbourhood would run screaming. But I didn’t care. I was so happy pretending I too could sing and dance like Whitney!
Whitney was only 48 but she achieved so much! She won a total of 415 Awards, 2 Emmys, 6 Grammys, 22 American Music Awards, 30 Billboard Awards & sold over 170 million Albums (I’m sure that number will continue to grow). In 2009, according to the Guiness Book of World Records, Whitney was the most awarded female of all time (Wikipedia).
Not only was Whitney an amazing, uber-talented singer but she showed the world she could act, in the popular film, The Bodyguard. That film not only had us all wanting a body guard like Kevin Costner, but had us all singing “I Will Always Love You” at the top of our lungs.
Whitney was to attend, and possibly perform, at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party but instead, Jennifer Hudson will be performing a tribute to the great lady herself at tonight’s Grammys.
The world will be able to see one last Whitney Houston performance as she had just finished shooting Sparkle. A film about three sisters who are part of a successful singing group and have to deal with the affect of fame and drugs.
Below are some of my favourite Whitney Houston moments.
How Will I Know – this was on repeat on my walkman (I used to sing this about my 1st Primary School crush)
The Greatest Love of All – still one of the most beautiful songs ever
I Wanna Dance With Somebody – not the greatest dancer but Whitney had me bopping away
Whitney Houston as Rachel Marron in The Body Guard – this always brings a tear to my eye
One Moment In Time – so inspiring
RIP Ms Houston. May you truly be in peace now. Thank you for the music and all the beautiful moments. My heart goes out to you and your beautiful daughter Bobbi Kristina.
