I was channel surfing tonight when I came across a new show that I haven’t heard anything about, Suburgatory.
The reason I stopped? The title intrigued me, so did the fact that I’d never heard of it, but the real reason I stopped was because there was a familiar, loveable face on the screen – that of Rex Lee (aka “LLOYD!”, Ari’s much abused PA in Entourage). In fairness he wasn’t in it for very long but it was enough of a hook to keep me watching. That, and the fact that Curb Your Enthusiam’s Cheryl Hines also features (she plays one of the popular girls’ mum, and someone who befriends George).
Suburgatory is about a single father, George Altman (Jeremy Sisto, most recently known for his work as Det Cyrus Lupo in Law And Order), who after finding a condom packet in his 16 year old daughter’s room, moves himself and Tessa (Jane Levy, last seen in the US version of Shameless), from the big bad world of Manhattan to suburban New York, or as his daughter refers to it, “Suburgatory”. Typically, suburban life is far different from their city life.
Suburgatory is a stereotypical fish out of water story, which also has a feel of Desperate Housewives about it (early seasons). The jury is still out on whether this will turn into Must See TV for me. That said, there is a freshness to it, a strong and likeable cast, and it has me intrigued enough to tune in again next week.
