Today’s Advent Calendar offering may be a little puzzling for people as Rocky is not a traditional Christmas film at the best of times, however, Rocky IV, the one about taking down the force that is Drago, and with that, the whole of the Soviet Union, would seem the unlikeliest of them all.
However, there is a tenuous link to Christmas as Rocky fought Drago on Christmas Day and he offers us some words of wisdom.
“I used to say to the kid, ‘the world ‘ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very rough, mean place. And no matter how tough you think you are, it’ll always bring you to your knees and keep you there permanently, if you let it.
You or nobody, ‘aint ever going to hit as hard as life. But it ‘ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward; how much you can take, and keep moving forward. If you know what you’re worth, go out and get what you’re worth, but you’ve got to be willing to take the hit.'”
He also ends the film on a reflective/positive note, before wishing his son a ‘Merry Christmas’:
“During this fight I seen a lot of changing. The way youse felt about me and the way I felt about you. In here, we’re two guys, killing each other but I guess that’s better than 20million. What I’m trying to say, if i can change and you can change, everybody can change.”
** Disclaimer **: There’s not much Christmas Cheer in this clip – there’s about 10 minutes of full on fighting. If you just want to hear Rocky’s words of wisdom and Christmas greeting, then start this at about 8.30.
