Early Thursday morning (US time) Emmy winner and Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, along with three-time Emmy winner, How I Met Your Mother star, and 2013 Emmys host, Neil Patrick Harris (filling in for House of Card’s Kate Mara, who was stranded in Santa Fe, New Mexico, thanks to a plane’s mechanical malfunction) announced this year’s Primetime Emmy Nominations.
American Horror Story leads the pack with 17 nominations, followed by Game of Thrones (16), Saturday Night Live and the Liberace biopic Behind The Candlelabra both garnered the third most nominations with 15.
In the Comedy category, 30 Rock leads the nominations with 13, closely followed by Modern Family with 12, and The Big Bang Theory with eight.
However, the nominations that everyone is talking about are the 14 history making nominations that were given to series that appear on Netflix – House of Cards (9 nominations), Arrested Development (3 nominations), Hemlock Grove (2 nominations). This is the first time that an online series (House of Cards) has been nominated in the prestigious Best Series category (in this case drama).
The academy changed the rules 6 years ago to allow online series to compete with cable and network programs. And while there have been a few internet shows nominated in the past, they were not in prominent categories.
In a statement, Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer, said, “we are overwhelmed with 14 nominations and honoured by a warm welcome which corroborates what we have always believed, that great television is great television regardless of where, when and how it is enjoyed. We are so proud of our series creators and their ground breaking work on House of Cards, Arrested Development and Hemlock Grove.
Also making Emmy history is Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, with her Lead Comedy Actress nomination (Veep) this now brings her total career nominations to 13 – equalling comedy and TV legend’s Lucille Ball’s mark of 13 career noms;
The nominations that I am most thrilled about are the 15 Behind the Candlelabra received. Although Behind the Candlelabra was shown in cinemas across Europe, in the US it was broadcast on HBO, and while all actors gave oscar winning performances, they do not qualify for the Academy Awards. It is great to see that the great work, and fabulous film has been recognised by the Emmys.
