This Sunday night, Ricky Gervais is back to host the 73rd Golden Globes award ceremony.
“The Globes” are one of my favourite awards ceremonies as it recognises the best that both TV and Cinema have produced over the past year.
Who will walk away with a Golden Globe statuette? Below are my predictions for all of the major film categories.
Best TV Series, Drama
Empire
Game of Thrones
Mr. Robot
Narcos
Outlander
My Winner: Game of Thrones or Empire
Game of Thrones missed out last year but thanks to the Jon Snow – is he isn’t he alive drama?, this could be the year it wins the award.
That said, Empire is witty, sharp, full of drama, filled with an outstanding cast and is one of the hottest TV shows in the US right now so this could be the show that takes it from Game of Thrones.
Best TV Series, Comedy/Musical
Casual
Mozart in the Jungle
Orange is the New Black
Silicon Valley
Transparent
Veep
My Winner: Veep
I’d love to see Orange is the New Black take this but I don’t think season 3 was its strongest. Sillicon Valley is hilarious yet it’s not as strong as Transparent or Veep – who will ultimately walk away with the award.
Best TV Miniseries or Movie
American Crime
American Horror Story: Hotel
Fargo
Flesh and Bone
Wolf Hall
My Winner: American Crime
Fargo walked away with it last year and there’s a possibility it could still be a favourite but all of the talk out of America has been about American Crime so I’d be surprised if this didn’t win it.
Best Actor, Drama
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Rami Malek, Mr. Robot
Wagner Moura, Narcos
Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul
Liev Schrieber, Ray Donovan
My Winner: Jon Hamm
This is one of the strongest categories this year. I think the voters would have chosen with their heart this year, as this is Jon Hamm’s last season with Mad Me I think he is going to walk away with it (as he did at the Emmys)
Best Actress, Drama
Caitriona Balfe, Outlander
Viola Davis, How to Get Away With Murder
Eva Green, Penny Dreadful
Taraji P. Henson, Empire
Robin Wright, House of Cards
My Winner: Taraji P. Henson, Empire
Very strong group of actresses here, all worthy of the award, however I think Taraji’s “Cookie” is one of the best characters on TV at the moment and that could see her taking the award. If Taraji doesn’t win it then it’s Viola’s.
Best Actor, Comedy
Aziz Ansari, Master of None
Gael Garcia Bernal, Mozart in the Jungle
Rob Lowe, The Grinder
Patrick Stewart, Blunt Talk
Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
My Winner: Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent
This isn’t the strongest of categories and I can’t really see anyone taking this from the great Jeffrey Tambor, who also won it in 2015.
Best Actress, Comedy
Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Jamie Lee Curtis, Scream Queens
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Gina Rodriguez, Jane the Virgin
Lily Tomlin, Grace and Frankie
My Winner: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
Gina Rodriguez won it last year but can’t see her winning it again. If Julia doesn’t get it, Lily Tomlin might get this as compensation for missing out for her performance in the film Grandma.
Best Supporting Actor
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Damian Lewis, Wolf Hall
Tobias Menzies, Outlander
Ben Mendelsohn, Bloodline
Christian Slater, Mr. Robot
Sarina’s Winner: Ben Mendelsohn, Bloodline
Bloodline received rave reviews when it dropped on Netflix. One of the standouts was Australian actor Ben Mendelson. He has been acting in Australia since her was in teens. He started off with a young Kylie Minogue on a teen drama, The Henderson Kids. Only really made an impact in Hollywood in the last few years. Great to see the perserverance and hard work pays off!
Best Supporting Actress
Uzo Aduba, Orange is the New Black
Joanne Froggatt, Downton Abbey
Regina King, American Crime
Judith Light, Transparent
Maura Tierney, The Affair
Maura Tierney won this last year but I think this could be Uzo’s year. Her portrayal of Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren is outstanding. She is not a mere caricature and Suzanne couldn’t be further from who Uzo is in real life.
Best Actor, Mini-Series or TV Movie
Idris Elba, Luther
Oscar Isaac, Show Me A Hero
David Oyelowo, Nightingale
Mark Rylance, Wolf Hall
Patrick Wilson, Fargo
My Winner: Idris Elba, Luther
This is anyone’s as there are no real stand outs in this category. That said, I think Idris may get it as compensation for not winning in his film category (Best Supporting Actor – Beasts of No Nation).
Best Actress, Mini-Series or TV Movie
Kirsten Dunst, Fargo
Lady Gaga, American Horror Story: Hotel
Sarah Hay, Flesh and Bone
Felicity Huffman, American Crime
Queen Latifah, Bessie
My Winner: Lady Gaga, American Horror Story: Hotel
I have to admit, my choice is solely based on the fact that it is Lady Gaga and I would never have thought she would ever be nominated in an acting category at the Golden Globes!
